The following is only a small sample of the medical documentation available on hypnosis.
The International Jounal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis Hypnosis In The Relief of Pain: Part I October 1997. This is a no non-sense approach and discussion of the pain relieving capabilities of hypnosis. To order this publication, call: 1-805-499-9774 Clinical and Experiemental Hypnosis by William S. Kroger, M.D. ISBN # 0-397-50377-6 See documentation proving that asthmatic attacks can be prevented despite evidence of a positive skin test. Read how asthmatic attacks have been induced with an artificial allergen: a fake rose instead of the real thing. Talk about a placebo effect. See page 208 if you want to rearrange your beliefs about what you can accomplish with your mind. Hypnosis
and Hypnotherapy With Children by Karen Olness, M.D. and Daniel P. Kohen,
M.D. ISBN #1-57230-054-X Clinical Hypnosis: Principles and Applications by Harold B. Crasilneck, Ph.D. and James A. Hall, M.D. ISBN # 0-205-10082-1 Is it possible to remove warts from anywhere on the body using hypnosis? You bet. See pages 371 and 372. Warning: There are some graphic photos. Clinical
Hypnosis with Children by William C. Wester II, Ed.D and Donald J.
O'Grady, Ph.D. ISBN # 0-87630-605-9 The following excerpts are from the book, 21st Century Medicine: Clinical Evidence For The Healing Power Of The Mind In the Archives of Dermatology (Vol. 136 No. 3, March 2000), Dr. Philip D. Shenefelt states the following: “A wide spectrum of dermatologic disorders may be improved or cured using hypnosis as an alternative or complementary therapy, including acne excoriée, alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis, congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma, dyshidrotic dermatitis, erythromelalgia, furuncles, glossodynia, herpes simplex, hyperhidrosis, ichthyosis vulgaris, lichen planus, neurodermatitis, nummular dermatitis, postherpetic neuralgia, pruritus, psoriasis, rosacea, trichotillomania, urticaria, verruca vulgaris, and vitiligo.”
“There is clinical and experimental evidence that the brain can start, influence, and stop biologic skin events.” (Stress and Psychoneuroimmunologic Factors in Dermatology--Dermatologic Clinics Volume 23 • Number 4 • October 2005)
"A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort." - Herm Albright
In a 1964 edition of The British Medical Journal, (1:1145-1148) doctors Fry, Mason and Pearson note in that “the mere act of hypnosis alone, without any specific suggestion, produced a reduction in skin reactivity.”
“Over a six year period, 173 successive patients suffering from asthma were treated using self-hypnosis, 82% were either much improved or experienced total remission of symptoms.” (Maher-Loughnan, G.P. 1980, "Hypnosis: Clinical application of hypnosis in medicine', British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 23: 447-55)
Carol Watkins, M.D. who is board certified in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry states the following:
“Hypnosis can help anxiety disorders in more than one way. It can directly decrease anxiety and panic by inducing a state of relaxation. The therapist can also use the hypnotic state to help the patient focus more clearly on issues that might be causing the anxiety.”
(You can read Dr. Watkins’s statement here: www.ncpamd.com/medical_hypnosis.htm#Anxiety_states)
In the July, 2001 issue of Scientific American there is an article titled The Truth and the Hype of Hypnosis. Following are a couple of mind-opening excerpts: “The pain-relieving effect of hypnosis is often substantial, and in a few cases the degree of relief matches or exceeds that provided by morphine." “Voluminous clinical studies also indicate that hypnosis can reduce the acute pain experienced by patients undergoing burn-wound debridement, children enduring bone marrow aspirations and women in labor.”
In their book Clinical Hypnosis: Principles and Applications, doctors Crasilneck and Hall state: “Hypnosis is of proven value in many cases of chronic low back pain”.
And then there is the article, Hypnotherapy as a treatment for enuresis which you can find in the January, 1985 Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. The conclusion is that when compared to other methods of treatment, hypnotherapy was an effective alternative or adjunctive form of treatment for enuresis. “Hypnosis is one of the most successful and appropriate interventions for burn injuries” – Lillian Fredericks, M.D. On page 299 of the book, Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy With Children, the authors discuss a case history of a 13-year old boy who had cancer. Imagery/hypnosis was used and the child was alive and well 15 years later.
“The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes.”- William James
