Evidence clearly shows that even hypnotic relaxation can have a significant influence on a person’s physiology – especially a diabetic’s blood sugar levels.
For example, according to an article by Yoram Barak: “Emotions are intimately involved in the initiation or progression of cancer, HIV, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders.” (Autoimmunity Reviews --Vol. 5, Issue 8, October 2006)
In the same article he goes on to state that “…an increase in secretory immunoglobulin A and a decrease in salivary cortisol were induced by pleasant emotions.”
Those who practice hypnosis or those who have benefited from hypnosis truly know that astonishing results can be obtained with hypnosis. However, for those clients who are skeptical, they may need a bit more reassurance.
That is why I am providing the next piece of solid evidence for hypnosis because citing solid (vs. anecdotal) evidence can help you to “pre-hypnotize” your client into a positive and receptive state of mind.
Here it is: According to James Stewart, M.D., hypnosis is very beneficial for many different conditions. To quote: “Despite substantial variation in techniques among the numerous reports, patients treated with hypnosis experienced substantial benefits for many different medical conditions.”
Dr. Stewart’s statement can be found in: Mayo Clin Proceedings. 2005;80:511-524.
My recommendation is to have a number of references available so that you can help your clients to understand that hypnosis is not a “fad” or “weird” treatment but is in fact, a methodology that is backed by a considerable amount of evidence.
With the above in mind, following is a script that can help those with diabetes.
The purpose of this hypnosis session is to help you make unconscious changes so that you are improving your health and experiencing better diabetes management which can lead to many positive changes in your life.
With these ideas in mind, take a deep breath, letting your eyes close as you exhale and let your mind and imagination easily go back in time to a pleasant or neutral memory of a chalkboard……..
Please note that I didn’t say “see a chalkboard”. I just want you to think of a chalkboard with your imagination……
Take another deep breath and let your imagination really bring this memory to you…….
Take one more deep breath while letting your imagination bring a memory to you and once you are able to think of a time when you can pleasantly remember a chalkboard, move your (left or right) index finger up….
Wait for client’s finger to move.
Excellent. Now, as you think of this chalkboard, I want you to think about the numbers I am about to say and just pretend you can think about them appearing and disappearing on the chalkboard.
I am going to start with the number 100 and count down slowly so that you can in some way imagine the numbers appearing and disappearing………
While you are imagining this, let your unconscious mind also imagine that you are letting a little bit of stress and tension disappear with each number so that in a little while, you are feeling much more relaxed….
100….take a deep breath and think of the number appearing and disappearing from the chalkboard……… 99… take a deep breath and think of the number appearing and disappearing from the chalkboard……… 98…. take a deep breath and think of the number appearing and disappearing from the chalkboard……… 97… take a deep breath and think of the number appearing and disappearing from the chalkboard……… 96…. take a deep breath and think of the number appearing and disappearing from the chalkboard………
And remember with each number you can easily allow a little bit more stress to disappear….
And while you are remembering this you can also remember that doctors have verified that deep relaxation can have wonderful effects on your health……..
(Continue to slowly count down from 95 to 50 giving your client time to absorb your suggestions. You will notice that this is a nice way to do a form of a progressive relaxation.)
At the count of 50, say the following:
By now you are much more relaxed than you were and so, when you are ready, go deep inside yourself and tell yourself that it is okay for you to go into a pleasant state of trance and once you do this, move your index finger.
(The above is based on the idea that you have already taught your client how to go into trance – if not chances are good they are already in trance anyway.)
Now you can double this pleasant level of trance simply by telling yourself that somehow you are going two times further into healing trance so, once you do this, again signal with your index finger that you have told yourself it is okay to gently, safely go two times more relaxed………..
(Wait for response)
Dr. Richard Surwit of Duke University has clearly proven that deep relaxation over time definitely helps people with diabetes to lower their blood sugar levels and so I want to absorb this idea that you are practicing more and more this deep, wonderful, hypnotic relaxation technique because it helps you in so many ways.
And, as well as helping you to safely lower your blood sugar levels, this deep hypnotic relaxation can help you in so many other wonderful ways so, again, tell yourself that you allow yourself to be hypnotically motivated to practice and experience this form of deep relaxation more and more, okay?
Once you do this, signal yes with your index finger…..
Now, once your client signals yes, tell them you will now continue counting down from 50 down to 1 in counts of 5 and with each count, they will let your suggestions go deeper into their unconscious in a deep and helpful way.
Once you finish counting backwards, give them some time to enjoy themselves and then emerge them from trance.
FINAL NOTE: Get your clients to agree to practice relaxing self-hypnosis on a daily basis because it is ultimately their responsibility. If they do, they will experience excellent benefits.
Warm regards,
Devin
PS, if you are taking my post-convention workshop, “Become A Certified Diabetes Motivational Coach™”, I look forward to sharing with you powerful and effective information and techniques that can really help diabetics or pre-diabetics.
PPS, ask people you know this one question: “Do you know anyone with diabetes?” This will give you an idea of how many people you could be helping.
